Unfortunately the Poodle (all three varieties) may suffer from genetic defects that may affect the quality of its life. Some research in the past years has developed a new tool, DNA testing, for the breeder in order to identify affected, sound or carrier animals for VonWillebrand disease. More research is needed to make DNA tests available for others diseases. It's up to breeders to use these tests and select for breeding the most sound dogs possible. We are responsible for the future of our breed.

It is the breeder's responsibilty to do health clearance tests prior to breeding a Poodle and to do (or check for up to date) health testings prior to using a stud.
