Hypothyroidism
(Standard / Miniature / Toy)
Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder that faces today's dog breeder.
(Endocrine glands are ductless glands that secrete substances called hormones into
the blood where they circulate to other areas in the body - their target tissues,
where the hormones exhibit their effect. Endocrine gland activity is coordinated by
the hypothalamus and pituitary glands.) Hypothyroidism involves a malfunction of the
thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism. Recognizing hypothyroidism in dogs is
very difficult because of the vague visual signs. Several diseases show the same
clinical signs. Initial therapy may involve supplementation with exogenous T4 (or
related chemical compounds). If the subject responds, the supplementation is stopped
to see if the symptoms reoccur. If the symptoms do not return, the subject may be
suffering from a thyroid-dependent disease rather than hypothyroidism. A reoccurence
of the symptoms is further evidence of hypothyroidism.
